Over at Quora , one poster tries to make sense of why ordinary people oppose immigration, and discovers something about countries: One aspect is that a policy may be potentially Pareto optimal - meaning that you cannot make anyone better off without making someone else worse off presuming that the winners were to compensate the losers - but that's of slim comfort to you, your family, town, county, or state if you lose and the winners don't actually compensate you as the welfare economics standard suggests would be possible. Well, wait a second... that sounds like zero-sum conditions, where no one can win without someone else losing. How can we explain this? This one was floating around social media and one of our regular readers wrote in to ask if it was real. Normally, in this situation, one asks the ostensible source for their input, so I wrote to Starbucks and queried them. Here was the reply: Hi Brett, Thank you for reaching out. That poster is 100% fake and was not posted by Starbucks. Best, Erin Starbucks Media Relations Team 206.318.7100 | press@starbucks.com There you have it: the official corporate voice disowns this poster, so unless we suspect them of lying -- made unlikely by the fact that this was theoretically seen at only one location -- this poster is from a third party. I cannot claim to be the world's largest Starbucks fan, mainly because it replaced a lot of independent coffee shops and their coffee is of variable quality, but one must be fair.

We live in a time of invisible insanity . On the surface, we have wealth, power, and technology; underneath, we see how a lack of social order has made people revert to the cruder ways of existence and become manipulative. There is very little trust because people do not share values in common, an identity, or even a sense of purpose; everyone exists for himself alone and denies any order larger than the human individual. Individualists hate social order because as soon as you have standards, you have a hierarchy based on who meets those standards. This means that social order tells people NO! in response to some actions they might contemplate, and they hate that, because the individualist in humanity resents any order -- even nature, logic, and fact -- above that of their own intentions. People have an inbuilt backdoor to their minds. We are self-pitying because we are aware of mortality and the smallness of our existence, including the limited amount of effect that we can have...

This Memorial Day weekend, it seems everyone is staying at home. The sales at the stores are not great, nor does there seem to be much excitement, but a fair number of people seem to be buying alcohol. The cookouts that made this such an odd holiday are gone as well; no more groups of neighbors, watery overpriced beer in hand, standing around a smoking grille and talking as if they knew each other. We cannot claim to be surprised by this, really, since national holidays have sort of faded away over the past couple years. It started with Halloween, when the people from outside the neighborhood drove so many kids to get candy that our subdivision basically just turned on the sprinklers and turned off the lights. It was amusing to see Prince Harry wed Meghan Markle. Obviously very few Britons believed in this, because they recognize an ethnic stab-in-the-back when they see one. Who came out? Government becomes an industry when its regulations or legal demands cause job categories to be created out of thin air. If government requires you to file Form #666-69 in order to build a house, there will be several jobs created: the bureaucrats who process the forms, the lawyers who guide you through the process around the invisible obstacles, and the people who fill out the forms for large firms. Voters rarely understand laws as imposing costs. To them, government makes a rule and then people follow it or are punished. They forget that in addition to the police who have to arrest the violators, many other costs are imposed, as well as delays. People always complain about red tape, but somehow forget that whenever they get scared before an election and vote for the nice person who promises a strong response.
